Doherty to quit race for governor

Scranton Mayor Chris Doherty said yesterday that one thing he would enjoy about running for a state Senate seat instead of governor is not having to devote much of every day to asking people for campaign contributions.

“I will be able to see a lot of voters during the day, and not spend as much time on the phone,” the Democrat said. “When you’re running for governor, you have to spend four to five hours a day on the phone trying to raise money.”

Doherty, 50, in his third term as the city’s chief executive, has scheduled a news conference this morning in his hometown to formally announce that he will seek the Senate seat to be vacated at year’s end by fellow Democrat Robert J. Mellow.

With his campaign for governor lagging in cash – he had $94,500 in the bank at year’s end – Doherty briefly considered dropping down a notch to run for lieutenant governor.

He said Mellow’s announcement last week that he would retire after nine terms “shocked everybody” in his 22d District, which includes Lackawanna County and portions of two other counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania.

“I know how important that district has been to the region, and I feel an obligation to go after it,” Doherty said. “I know I can do well for the area in Harrisburg.”

Doherty will make his announcement at Commonwealth Medical College, a new school that he said was partly financed by a $35 million state grant Mellow obtained. He said he hoped to bring home the bacon in the same way.

Doherty does not plan to back any of the other Democrats running for governor, who include state Auditor General Jack Wagner, State Sen. Anthony H. Williams of Philadelphia, Montgomery County Commissioner Joe Hoeffel, and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato.
